The Divergent Series: Allegiant
For this project I worked on this 956-frame-long opening shot of the movie. I had to blend together two plates (or three if I count the middle part which as all-CG), one was an aerial shot of Chicago and another plate shot on a set in front of a bluescreen. I had to turn the footage of downtown Chicago into a destroyed dystopian version of it.
I used a combination of CG destroyed buildings and matte painted buildings. I also added the fence that is in the background and had to remove the lake that's behind it. Where the lake used to be I faked some reflections in comp to simulate some small areas of water and reflections from the sun .I had to remove some lens flares and replicate some other ones. This was all done using deep compositing. I did not add the movie title into the shot.
Since the buildings are missing most of their walls and windows I had to first get rid of the real buildings from the plate. I used projections to apply patches into the sky to get rid of the buildings and had to put back moving clouds.
Once the camera starts panning I had to apply a different camera move that would meet with the middle part of the shot which was entirely CG.
As the camera starts to get close we see the woman (Tris) and the man (Four) climbing a building. Only part of that building was built on set. The top and bottom and parts of the inside are CG, so I had to do lots of blending between the real and the fake one.
I also had to do a wire removal on Tris and Four, the one on Tris was particularly challenging as she was moving a lot and her clothes and hair were getting deformed by the wire.
